My dear four followers,

In this post we’ll introduce another key topic for the construction of the perfect wardrobe, as Cate asked me to do. The colors.

Have you ever noticed how many clothes or sweaters you have in your closet, tossed in a forgotten corner because there is always a good reason not to wear them? << Uhm, this sweater, I'm not going to put it on today – just today? – on me it’s so bland >> or << this jacket no, it looks so sad that, in the end, I make me feel sad too.> >
But when you bought  these clothes they seemed all so perfect on you, you were so happy when you picked them out and bought them. What has happened?

The explanation is simple. They are clothes with colors that do not suit on you. They didn’t have your friendly colors. Unconsciously, you felt this jarring even if, at the time of purchase - driven by the low bargain price or by the model of the perfect dress you tried on or even from insincere compliments of the shopkeeper - you have put aside this your discomfort.

Friendly colors are, however, the only ones that we will achieve a splendid appearance, and be able to erase the signs of fatigue from our face. They are the only ones that will light us, instantly, without much makeup. To identify, therefore, what those colors are and which, consequently, are the unfriendly colors, those that tend to turn off our face, showing signs of fatigue, it will be knowledge that comes in handy when you have to choose the hue of the your clothing, the right reflection for your hair at the hairdresser, the colors for your makeup, your accessories, hats, sunglasses and the scarf to tie around your neck. Do not forget the ties and scarves for men. This knowledge is invaluable because the right shades of colors will not only enhance your natural beauty but and make it more likely that people will notice you and not the dress that you wear.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

The Color Analysis or Seasonal color analysis, as it’s named in English, is the art of harmonizing the colors with those of the person and has its roots far back in time.

The theory was established at the beginning of the last century, and was elaborated by Johannes Itten (1888-1967), a Swiss artist and teacher at the Bauhaus School of Art, Germany.

Itten, in his bible book, the “Elements of Color” (1961), set off by dividing colors into two different sections: warm colors (with a yellow component) and cool colors (with a blue component). These two sections were, in turn, divided into two others: bright colors and dark colors. He had created  four groups of colors which he called the 4 seasons of the year:

·        Autumn, warm and dark,
·        Winter, cold and dark,
·        Spring, warm and bright,
·        Summer, cold and bright. Notò, poi, che queste palettes di colori, che ricordavano nelle loro tinte le 4 stagioni, miglioravano la qualità dei suoi dipinti se accostati ai volti delle persone ritratte.

Then he noticed that these palettes of colors, reminiscent of the colors in the four seasons, improved the quality of his paintings if they matched  the faces of the people portrayed. Era nata la Teoria dell'analisi del colore delle 4 stagioni. The theory of the analysis of the colors (of the 4 seasons) was born.

The art of harmonizing colors with those of one
’s person was resumed, then, in the '80s by Carole Jackson. The American color consultant argued that being able to identify the best colors for own skin will enhanced considerably the beauty of the face perceived by others and, consequently, increase their self-confidence. Carole Jackson in order to help the women in this endeavor identified in her book, Color Me Beautiful ( 1980), four different colors of women, depending on the tone of the skin and she was inspired too by the shades of the four seasons:

Audrey Hepburn, the Winter type, cold and clear

Step 2: The Seasonal color analysis or the art of harmonizing colors with those of your face

Grace Kelly, Summer type, fresh and delicate

Step 2: The Seasonal color analysis or the art of harmonizing colors with those of your face

Katharine Hupburn, the Autumn type, warm and intense

Step 2: The Seasonal color analysis or the art of harmonizing colors with those of your face

Marylin Monroe, the Spring type, clear and bright

Step 2: The Seasonal color analysis or the art of harmonizing colors with those of your face

and for each of these main categories she provided, in her book a palette of 31 different shades, to be consulted at the last minute whenever you were in front of a dress or piece of a jewel and you were just ready about to decide whether to buy it or not. If the object of our desire was part of this chromatic palette reference, then and only then, would the green light be switched on for the purchase, otherwise, it should have been discarded without regret and considered a sworn enemy of our own image.

It turned out, then, that many women did not fit into any of these categories, and it could very well be a mix of colors, both hot and cold.

Color Me Beautiful admitted, it is true, some variables to colors standard profile, but excluded, without exception, the possibility that profiles were pertaining in multiple seasons.

Fifteen years after the text of the pioneers of the style, Carole Jackson, the new paladins of armocromia, Mary Spillane and Christine Sherlock published Color Me Beautiful's Looking Your Best, just to satisfy that need for a greater flexibility which until then was missing.

The system of the 4 seasons was perfected with the conversion in a system of 12 seasons, since each season was divided into 3 subcategories, this depends on the temperature, intensity and chroma of the women who fell within it.

In the meantime, the book of Mrs. Jackson was followed by numerous others, and after she sold her empire she retired to private life in her luxurious villa in Virginia. However her theory has undoubtedly made school and currently remains a point of reference that modern color consultants can certainly criticize – Even thought it has been gone for more than 30 years this theory has evolved - but they certainly can’t disregard or ignore it, it’s still being constituted by the alphabet on whether to begin the knowledge of color analysis.

Today Color Me Beautiful is nowhere to be found in the original edition which has been out of circulation for many years.

The art of harmonizing colors to your color type is widely followed by the Hollywood star system, from the first color film and still today, crowds of make-up artists and personal stylists recommend what to wear or how to put makeup to the stars. Sometimes though, celebrities, in spite of their availability of professional men they make mistakes in choosing their appropriate colors or, perhaps, choosing colors which are suited to a different season (female) and not that which is appropriate for them. To you, here is the final effect!

Are you still skeptical about the relevance of armocromia in choosing colors for your clothes or make-up?
